More Henkel Corporate Reporting 2014
An important objective of our strategy is fostering sustainable, resource-conserving consumption. Our products are the key here. They are used daily in millions of households and industrial processes. Thus, we concentrate on developing products that enable the efficient use of resources such as energy and water.
Through targeted communication, we also strive to promote a responsible attitude when using the products. This is especially important, because the environmental footprint of many of our products largely depends on their being used correctly.
Besides providing appropriate products, our collaboration with retailers also plays an important role. Retail groups are important partners for Henkel on the road to more sustainable consumption. They offer excellent platforms for informing consumers about more sustainable products and encouraging them to use these products in an environmentally responsible way.
During this year’s REWE-Dialog Forum, representatives from industry, science and nongovernmental organizations focused on how to drive sustainable consumption among consumers and what measures need to be taken when addressing this important target group. Henkel participated for the fifth time as a premium partner during the REWE-Group’s “Sustainability Weeks” and in the Dialog Forum.
Consumers have a decisive influence on how much energy is consumed and how much carbon is emitted whenever they step into the shower. The interactive resource calculator provided by Dial and Schauma gives every consumer an opportunity to find out online how energy consumption varies depending on the temperature of the water and the time spent in the shower. Consumers can thus quickly see how they themselves can influence the carbon footprint of a product.
The Persil laundry costs calculator shows consumers at a glance how much it costs them per year to do their laundry and how much they could save relative to their usual laundering habits if they washed all of their laundry at 30° Celsius only. The calculator also shows the amount of CO2 emissions generated simply by doing the laundry, and how much these emissions can be reduced by switching to 30° Celsius wash cycles. For comparison, the tool additionally indicates how far an average mid-range car would have to travel to emit the same amount of CO2.
Due to the improved solubility of the Pril 10 tabs distributed in Italy, the active ingredients are released more quickly in the dishwasher. This improvement significantly boosts dishwashing performance in low-temperature cycles. At www.pril.it consumers can estimate the energy used by a dishwashing cycle and calculate possible savings in energy and money.
The Internet site henkel-car.com shows how the use of Henkel technologies in automobile manufacturing results in improvements in sustainability. These include reductions in the number of process steps, cuts in energy and water consumption, and the manufacture of lighter and safer vehicles. TecTalis, for example, replaces conventional zinc phosphating in the pretreatment of car bodies and minimizes energy consumption. In lightweight engineering, the two-step process for pretreating aluminum car bodies decreases the amount of waste by up to 30 percent. With these technologies, Henkel supports the efforts of the whole of the automotive industry to increase efficiency and quality.
