More Henkel Corporate Reporting 2014
Occupational health and safety is one of our highest priorities. We remain focused on our long-term objective of “zero accidents.” With this objective in mind, we work to continuously improve our health and safety performance. Our interim goal is to reduce our worldwide occupational accident rate by 20 percent by the end of 2015 (baseline 2010).
We insist on strict compliance with our Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Standards. Therefore, training sessions are held regularly at all sites to create employee awareness and avoid accidents. We also conduct training sessions for the staff of contractors working at our sites.
The Laundry & Home Care business unit held training sessions for all of its production management employees. The business unit also introduced a standard safety-training template for visitors and contractors in 2014. The Beauty Care business unit trained employees on health and safety as part of its optimization program Total Productive Management Plus.
In 2014, the Adhesive Technologies business unit introduced safety workshops based on a train-thetrainer approach to eliminate at-risk behaviors and further establish safety as a core value.
In 2014, we recorded 0.9 occupational accidents per million hours worked. That is an improvement of 25 percent relative to the base year 2010 and means that we already achieved our 2015 target one year ahead of schedule.
Despite our focus on health and safety, an employee in Port Said, Egypt, was fatally injured in 2014 as a result of an electrical shock. To prevent similar accidents from occurring in the future, Henkel has instructed relevant production sites to perform a detailed analysis on the handling of electrical equipment.
More than 1,000 Adhesive Technologies employees participated in Safety Day activities at many production sites in 2014. We care about the health and performance capability of our employees. We offer targeted health and preventive programs to guard against workplacerelated risks that might lead to long-term illnesses. In designing these programs, our sites determine different priorities based on local requirements. In order to better implement these programs, all Henkel sites worldwide report on four key figures each quarter: availability of first aiders and emergency medical care, the number of occupational health exams, and the occurrence of occupational illness.
In a world that is becoming increasingly complex and dynamic, and has with growing demands, operational measures to maintain mental health are becoming more and more important. That is why Henkel offers support to its employees. Many countries now have programs that offer all employees the opportunity to seek advice on the subjects of time, stress, and conflict management. Initiatives on more flexible organization of working time should also help our employees to improve the balance between work and leisure and to reduce workplace-related stress factors.
Henkel underlined its commitment to this holistic health and safety philosophy by joining the Unternehmen für Gesundheit (companies for health) network. As long ago as 2002, Henkel signed the European Union’s “Luxembourg Declaration on Workplace Health Promotion in the European Union.” As part of the company’s efforts to continuously improve preventive health care measures, an annual conference takes place enabling the physicians of all Henkel companies in Germany, as well as the Human Resources departments, to compare notes. The findings are made available to all sites worldwide.
Against the background of the demographic shift, companies must look for options in order to offer employees long-term employment possibilities until retirement. Henkel has participated in the Demography Project Workability Index (WAI) since 2010. Through this, each organizational unit as well as individual employees are able to compile a strengths and weaknesses profile. Employees are then provided with tailor-made requirements for action in terms of improvement and preservation of health and productivity. On a company level, information is provided in terms of workplace design, trainings, organization optimization and working atmosphere.
In order to raise awareness for the causes of back and neck pain, Petra Zoeller, Health Coach from Henkel’s medical department in Düsseldorf, paid a visit to Thailand’s Yamahatsu Beauty Care plant in 2014 to train Henkel employees how to effectively prevent such unnecessary bodily strain at work. The participants learned how to stand, sit, bend and lift in the correct postures, and were taught exercises to strengthen their muscles.
The subject of ergonomic safety has become more important in recent years as employees seek to improve the way they work. Even little mistakes have a big impact on the body, for example, computer screens that are too high can cause neck pain. As part of the program, checks are done at the workplace after each safety training so as to ensure the environment is ergonomically-friendly.
For Henkel, it is a major goal to reduce such back problems and strains, using a combination of training and ergonomic knowledge as preventive medicine. With the pilot training in Thailand having been conducted, the program is expected to be rolled out to Henkel employees across the region.
